Biography

Dr. Russell Petrie is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon and fellowship-trained sports medicine physician specializing in the treatment of knee, shoulder, and sports-related injuries. He treats athletes at every level, from recreational to professional, as well as active individuals seeking to restore function, mobility, and performance. 

Dr. Petrie earned his undergraduate degree from the University of California, Berkeley, where he double majored in Biology (with High Honors) and Economics. He completed his medical training at the Mayo Clinic, earning his medical degree and completing his internship and residency in orthopedic surgery at the Mayo Graduate School of Medicine. He went on to pursue advanced fellowship training in orthopedic sports medicine at the University of Pittsburgh, where he worked with collegiate athletes and professional sports organizations, including the Pittsburgh Steelers. His training also includes experience at Nemours Children’s Hospital and the Minneapolis Sports Medicine Center. 

At Newport Orthopedic Institute, Dr. Petrie serves as Chairman and President of the Board, helping guide the organization’s long-term clinical vision and strategic direction. He is also actively involved in physician education as a core faculty member of the Hoag Orthopedic Institute Sports Medicine Fellowship Program and has served as an arthroscopy instructor at the San Diego Shoulder Institute for more than 15 years. 

Dr. Petrie’s professional experience includes serving as a former team physician for the Los Angeles Chargers and former Head Team Physician for Vanguard University Athletics. He currently serves as team physician for Corona del Mar High School and treats patients from across the United States and internationally. 

In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Petrie is the founder and Chief Innovation Officer of Okeanos®, an international materials science company focused on advancing sustainable, mineral-based packaging solutions to reduce plastic waste.
